Paul Hirsch and AB 5

Join us, Wednesday January 22 for the first meet of the new decade.

We are excited to announce that Academy Award winning editor Paul Hirsch will be one of our guests. Paul has collaborated with directors like Brian De Palma, George Lucas, George A. Romero, Herbert Ross, John Hughes and many others. He has edited over forty films, some of which include: Carrie, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, Footloose, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Ray and Mission: Impossible. Paul recently wrote and just published a book detailing his over fifty year career, "A long time ago in a cutting room far, far away."

Also, AB 5 is now California law and there seems to be a lot of confusion, surrounding it. AB 5 will require businesses to use something called an “ABC” test to figure out if their workers are employees or independent contractors. How will this affect those of us in the entertainment industry? Entertainment lawyer Jonathan Handel will join us to explain what exactly is AB 5, and what effects it might have on you.

Plus World Famous Raffle and Stump The Gurus.

Agenda (subject to change and availability)

6:45- 7:15PM - Stump the Gurus
Join Gurus Steve Kanter, Michael Kammes, Patrick Southern and Zack Arnold as they will attempt to answer all of your questions and solve all of your problems concerning Resolve and FCPX, Avid, Premiere Pro and anything else you can think of. If they can't solve your problem or answer your question, then you go home with a problem, but you still got out of the house, so that's not a bad thing.

7:20PM - 8:00PM - What is AB 5 and What Does it Mean for Me? - Jonathan Handel
AB 5 is a new state law that will rewrite the rules of freelance and gig work in California, causing confusion among the many workers who earn their living as independent contractors in the Entertaiment Industry.
Workers as varied as musicians and photojournalists could be affected by AB5, which has taken effect Jan. 1.
The law codifies a 2018 California Supreme Court decision that introduced strict new rules governing the legal definition of independent contracting in the state. In short, more companies will be pushed to classify their workers as employees. Entertaiment lawyer Jonathan Handel will explain all.

About Jonathan Handel
Jonathan Handel practices transactional entertainment and technology law at TroyGould in Los Angeles and is a contributing editor for The Hollywood Reporter, where he covers entertainment labor, law and business. Handel is also an adjunct professor at USC Gould School of Law and Southwestern Law School, where he teaches courses on entertainment unions and guilds, and has previously worked as a talent lawyer; as associate counsel at the Writers Guild; and as a litigator. He is also a former computer scientist and was involved in local politics for a decade. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College in Applied Math and Computer Science, and a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, Handel frequently appears in the media as a commentator on entertainment and technology law and business.
