How To Academy Presents....

She is the poet laureate of rock – an electrifying performer with lyrical gifts beyond compare. Now Patti Smith joins us to tell her most powerful story yet.

From the first chords of her 1975 debut Horses, Patti Smith’s place in the pantheons of rock’n’roll has never been in doubt. From Madonna to Michael Stipe, Florence + the Machine to Morrissey, her influence on the history of music extends across nations, genres and generations.

But Patti Smith’s talents were never confined to punk rock. The author of five collections of poetry, and of the National Book Award winning memoir Just Kidsand its sequel M Train, her ability to turn the materials of her life into evocative, poignant and elegiac testimonies to the people and places that define American counterculture have led her to equal acclaim as an author and storyteller.

Now she joins How To Academy to reveal her latest memoir: Year of the Monkey. Following a run of New Year's concerts at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore, Patti embarked upon a year of solitary wandering – a year that brought unexpected turns, heightened mischief and inescapable sorrow. Journeying from Southern California to the Arizona desert, the Kentucky farm of a friend in crisis to the hospital room of a valued mentor, she faced loss, ageing, and a dramatic shift in the political landscape of America.

In Conversation with the author and editor Erica Wagner, Patti will tell us the story of that year’s reckoning. And she’ll be joined by her long-time band-mate Tony Shanahan for a short live set.

Don’t miss this unique night of art and wonder from one of the greatest performers of all time.
