The original music performed by the Patrick Wolff Sextet is modern, and it is jazz, but it sounds nothing like modern jazz. Using a rich harmonic palette influenced by composers like Andrew hill, Booker Little, and Ornette Coleman, Wolff attempts to utilize the whole jazz history of forms and approaches to improvisation. Solos are treated as integrated parts of a composition rather than merely showcases for a soloist, forms shift from through-composed to loose and malleable, and a changing orchestration is emphasized to create the sound of a larger ensemble. Tying the whole project together is Wolff's love of melody, not confined to jazz, but drawing melodies from shades of tango, west african highlife, and a pile of old folkways records. Played by some of the best jazz musicians on the West coast, this music is as enjoyable as it is unusual.
