QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON SYSTEMIC CONSTELLATION

What is a Family Constellation?

Systemic or Family Constellation is a therapeutic and philosophical work that was developed by the pedagogue, psychotherapist and German philosopher Bert Hellinger, whose technique involves phenomenology. Hellinger developed his method from empirical observations, based on various forms of family psychotherapy, on patterns of behavior that are repeated in families groups over generations. Through group experiences, he discovered the existence of a consciousness, a memory that acts in the families and aims at the perpetuation of the group. There are three laws that work in the family systems, also called Orders of Love. Through the experiential techniques of the Family Constellations it is possible to bring out the hidden dynamics of the family, thus identifying the laws that have been transgressed. From then on it is possible to create a solution to the imprisonment and sufferings of group members.

This work is not linked to any religion, although it is based on spirituality/energy.

What are the Orders of Love?

Bert Hellinger discovered that there are three laws, orders or necessities that work in the family and other groups / systems which objectives are to perpetuate its existence.

  • BELONGING (no member of the system can be excluded nor forgotten)
  • HIERARCHY (order of arrival in the system)
  • BALANCE (between giving and taking / receiving)

When such laws are violated in a family, there are compensations that work in other members of the same and / or later generations. Thanks to the representation, the client can see where the entanglement is, how such laws can be respected again and the possibility of reestablishing order in their system. Then he can, by living the dynamics, see the next step that will lead him to a solution for the question that imprisoned him, without his awareness. There is no need for the client to understand this therapy with the mind and reasoning and "analyze" the process. All he has to do let be touched by the work and feels its effects afterwards.

What is a System?

The system is a group of people who remain united or bound by an interest in forces that permeate them, whether or not they are aware of these forces.

Who is part of a person's Family System?

Parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and ancestors, uncles, first love (where there was sexual intercourse), spouses, ex-spouses, children living or dead, children aborted, others excluded or forgotten and people harmed or murdered by a family member.

How is the Workshop?

A Family Constellation workshop is a group experience and not an academic course. Neutral representatives (without client links) are used to represent his/her family members and to work on a problem brought by him. The therapist acts as a facilitator between the client and the "field," which brings to light all that is in the unconscious, in the family memoir. In the "field" are placed representatives of the client's family. And the energy there is revealed. A client's constellation can last from minutes to about an hour and a half. Depending on the availability of the therapist and the permanence group can be made from three to six constellations in a full day of work. Those who watch also receive the work as well. The client making a constellation usually must wait a few months to bring up a new question. These are not weekly sessions.

What does "Constellate an Issue" mean?

Constellate a issue is one way to attend a workshop. The person who decides to present an issue is called a client. The client brings a personal issue the therapist (facilitator) who explores the topic with some questions and asks the client to choose people who will represent certain roles. The client places the representatives in the center of the circle of attendants and the constellation will follow the dynamics that arise.

What does "Watch" or "Participate as a Representative" mean?

In this form of participation, the person will be present and available to participate (or not) in a constellation of a client.

Which issues be worked on in the Family Constellations?

Any important topic that the client is not getting worked out, such as:

  • relationships,
  • emotional imbalances,
  • separations,
  • chronic diseases,
  • financial problems,
  • professional life,
  • pain,
  • repeated family patterns
  • addiction

Do I need to take my whole family?

No. The work affects all members of the family (living and dead) even though they are not present. They will be represented by people in the group.

Can I bring my wife, husband, boyfriend or girlfriend?

Yes, but is not necessary.

I am a psychologist; may I bring taking my patient “to constellate”?

Yes, this is very common, as well as enlightening for both the psychologist and the patient. The constellation is an excellent method to accelerate and clarify therapeutic diagnoses. The patient can also go alone.

Who is Bert Hellinger?

Hellinger was born in Germany in 1925. He was a seminarian in a Catholic order and at age 20 became a priest. He graduated in Theology and Philosophy and was sent as a Catholic missionary to South Africa, where he acted as director of several schools. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated in University Education. In the late 1960s, he resigned from the clergy and returned to Germany. He studied Gestalt therapy, Psychoanalysis and Primal Therapy. After years of practicing group dynamics, he arrived at Systemic Therapy itself. Hellinger divorced Hena, his first wife and married Sophie, with whom he still holds courses, seminars and workshops in several countries. From the Family Constellations, he expanded his method of work to other systems, as well as Business Constellations, Organizational Constellations, Educational Constellations, Ethnic Conflicts, etc. The set of all types of constellations, coming from the method created by Bert, came to be called Systemic Constellations. Hellinger has published more than 30 books with combined sales of one million copies in at least ten languages.
