Event Details


Usually river trip is the first weekend in April, unless it falls on Easter Sunday.  This year it is April 5-8, 2018. 


The Southeastern California Conference Teen Leadership Reward River Trip is a leisurely outing and reward trip for those teen leaders who have worked hard in their clubs as leaders and helpers during the Pathfinder year. 


Only those teen leaders who have completed ALL the teen qualifications and been invested as teen leaders are invited to attend.  Please refer to the Policy Book, Teen Section.  Teens and staff must meet the eligibility requirements to go on the water (canoes, rafts, etc.). 


Program - $15 per teen and staff.  This fee helps cover programming, equipment rental, patches, campgrounds, etc., and is subject to change.  You have the option of paying by credit card, church check or invoicing the church.  Simply select the ‘Order Now’ button. Then on the registration page select the payment method with the down arrow in the payment section.  The church will be invoiced after the event if payment is not received by the event date.

Canoes - $65 per person for the weekend which can be billed to the church if not paid at the time of the event.  This includes canoe, paddles and life jacket.  Shuttle service is not provided.  Be sure of those you have renting canoes as there will not be any refunds; fees are transferable.

Camping - Pirate Cove Resort(new ownership, no longer run by Moabi Regional Park) charges $3 per person, per night.  Fees are paid to the resort when you arrive.  You do not need to contact them for camping reservations.

Motor homes are $40 per night for full hook-ups, $30 for partial.  Resevations for RVs or trailers must be made with Pirate Cove Resort.  Contact them at or (866) 301-3000. 


The club director or secretary must submit the online registration form at fifteen (15) days before the event.  Registration deadline is Wednesday, March 21

Swim Check-off Confirmation (see eligibility)

SECC Youth Ministries will confirm swim check-off by email after the deadline.  The director and teens will need to come to the on-site registration where the director will confirm attendees and wristbands will be placed on teens and staff. 

Registration On-Site

The club director or secretary should go IMMEDIATELY to registration located at the registration banner to confirm attendees.  Each attendee must be present to receive the appropriate wrist band which identifies who is swim certified or not.


Pirate’s Cove is on the banks of the Colorado River just 11 miles southeast of Needles on Interstate 40; Park Moabi Road off-ramp.  The park has excellent facilities, clean rest rooms and showers.  The personnel know the Pathfinders from previous years and welcome us back each year.  Let’s keep it that way!



Limited to invested, qualified teen leaders and their senior staff.  To go on the water (canoes, rafts, etc.) there are two requirements: 

  1. All adults and teen leaders must have completed the Pathfinder Intermediate Swimming Honor taught by a qualified instructor
  2. All adults and teen leaders must have one of the following:
  • Red Cross certification for intermediate swimming
  • YMCA card certification for intermediate swimming (Fish)
  • Swim Check-off certification (A conference-wide one is held in January by the Drayson Center. Check with your county coordinator for a local one.) 

Copies of the Red Cross or YMCA card intermediate certification MUST be on file at SECC Youth Ministries where the records will be maintained; including the swim check-off certification done by the Drayson Center.  There are NO EXCEPTIONS of these two (2) requirements for those going on the water!!  Dry land activities are provided daily for teen leaders and staff that cannot meet the swimming requirements.

Canoes & Rafts

  1. Canoes, kayaks, rubber rafts, metal drum or wood rafts must be in good repair and safe.
  2. If you have a raft, you may use a small 10-20 horsepower motor for safety, choosing to stay on the right side of the river and with the group.  All rafts are to have a cone or pointed bow end to split the water and to use a tie for towing, if necessary.  ONLY RAFTS WITH CONES OR POINTED BOW WILL BE TOWED.  All rafts must have the following:
  • 24" railing around the vessel
  • Life ring with 50 feet of rope
  • Gas and battery stored in a separate water tight containers
  • Enough life jackets for all passengers aboard the vessel
  • Total weight limit of vessel should reflect the number of passengers on board
  • Minimum of two (2) persons in charge of vessel: 

           - Helms man (driver)

           - Safety observer


There will be an individual inspection of all participants before permission to launch is given to verify that: 

  • Each person has proper flotation device on
  • Water fighting equipment conforms to the rules

Legal & Safety Requirements

  1. All canoes and rafts with motors must be REGISTERED with the California Department of Motor Vehicle.
  2. EVERYONE on the river MUST WEAR a Coast Guard approved life preserver or ski jacket.  NO EXPCEPTIONS! You will not BE ALLOWED ON THE RIVER WITHOUT ONE ON!!  IF YOU DO NOT COMPLY, YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE WATER FOR THE DAY, by personnel from a safety boat.
  3. DO NOT  hang any part of your body over the edge of float equipment while in motion or the motor is running.
  4. ALL CRAFTS with a motor MUST carry a fire extinguisher.  Each craft is to carry a rope for towing.

  1. The flotilla will be led by the lead safety boat.  NO Pathfinder craft will go ahead of this designated lead safety boat.
  2. A safety boat will bring up the rear of the flotilla.  NO Pathfinder craft is to be behind this designated safety boat.
  3. There will be NO SKIING during this trip as is is a float trip.  NO JET SKIL, NO FACTORY MADE PONTOON BOATS OR SPEED BOATS!
  4. TRASH IS NOT to be tossed in the river.  Take out what you bring in.  KEEP the river and beaches clean and better than you found it.

Sabbath Activities

  1. Please have your campsite completely setup and showers taken BEFORE SUNDOWN FRIDAY.
  2. Everyone is to be at Friday flag lowering and worship ready to spend a beautiful Sabbath with God.  A meaningful program is planned.
  3. All teen leaders, staff and families (everyone who has come on the river trip) are expected to participate in planned activities.  Church and Sabbath school are held in the morning with afternoon activities and evening social , including worships.
  4. Please do not leave the campsite area without permission.
  5. Use of any watercraft Sabbath hours, except for approved conference activities, is not permitted.

Senior Staff

Each club must have a minimum of two senior staff (over the age of 21); one male and one female when sending both male and female teen leaders; ratio of one adult staff for every six to eight teens.

Note:  Senior staff coming with the teen leadership group may bring families if necessary, though we ask to keep extras to a minimum.  No children are allowed on the river as this a a teen leadership reward trip, not a family outing.  Families are expected to follow the same guidelines as the teen leaders and staff for eligibility. 

The Education Department of Southeastern California Conference has agreed that students may be dismissed from our schools at 12:00 noon, Thursday, for the camporee when proper arrangements are made. Even though schools have been notified of the dates, each club director should submit a list of his/her Pathfinders who will need to be dismissed at noon. This should be done no later than one week before the camporee. If you do not plan to be gone by noon, please do not take the Pathfinders out of school.


For public schools, students and/or parents will need to work directly with their school and teachers to be excused from class and receive assignments. A letter is available on our website to give the school and teachers.


Water Fighting Equipment

Restricted to pails and containers ONLY.  No balloons, mechanical or pressure pumps, slingshots, etc. 

What to Wear

Other than Sabbath, modest walking shorts are appropriate beach wear are optional at the discretion of the club director.  Swimsuit are: 

  • Males - modest swim trunk
  • Females - modes one piece swimsuit or tankini (a tankini is a two-piece suit with a tank top and swim bottoms); top must cover mid-section and bottoms must be full coverage; boy/board shorts are acceptable.  Colored t-shirts can be worn, no white t-shirts 

Pathfinders and club staff are encouraged to wear Class A (dress) uniforms on Sabbath morning for church service and Class C (field) uniforms, teen counselor polo shirts, in the afternoon.  Modest shorts are optional at the discretion of the club director.   NO SWIMSUITS!

SECC Pathfinders

The Pathfinder Club, a church-centered recreational-spiritual program, is designed for both boys and girls.  The program offers action, adventure, challenge, and group activities that produce team spirit and loyalty to the church.  Pathfinders are encouraged to complete their class studies to learn more about Jesus, by digging deep into the Bible and into God's second book, nature.  One of the Pathfinder Clubs' basic purposes is to fulfill the Elijah message of Malachi in which the "hearts of the parents are turned toward their children and the hearts of the children are turned to their parents."  As parents and church members work, worship, and play together with the Pathfinders, the so-called generation gap disappears in a bond of common experience.  Children learn best by example; the whole Pathfinder philosophy is built on this idea.  It is important, then, that spiritually committed, dedicated leaders of high principles be chosen to work with the Pathfinders.
