Workshop Description

Patterson in Paterson

Ben Patterson (1934-2016), a classically-trained double bassist, left the United States in 1956 after no symphony orchestra would hire a black man. Patterson then began to create poems in the form of instructions, what he called "compositions for actions."

In honor of Ben Patterson, we will be making some of Patterson's "compositions for actions." We will be looking at how a list of instructions can be a kind of poetry. And then we will write some Patterson-inspired "compositions for actions" for Paterson, New Jersey.

Facilitated by Gregory Laynor, PhD

Dr. Gregory Laynor lives in Philadelphia and works as a librarian. He has taught poetry at Temple University and the University of Washington.
