Venue: PATA Engagement Hub, Bangkok, Thailand

OVERVIEW

Twenty years ago, China had just cleared the one trillion USD annual GDP hurdle and less than ten million Chinese crossed the border in a year, most of them travelling no further than Hong Kong SAR. The first wave of Chinese outbound travel was characterised by an increase in business travel thanks to the integration of China into the global economy and by leisure package group tours focussed on ticking off in quick succession the main destinations and famous sights and endless shopping. After 2012, when China became the biggest international tourism source market in the world and the Millennials represented the majority of travellers, the segmentation of the market became more pronounced, with FITs and modular travellers gaining importance, looking for authenticity and experiences with the local culture to share with their peers back home using the new mobile communication tools.

Today, with China’s annual GDP reaching 13 trillion USD and close to 200 million trips be Chinese outside of Mainland China, Generation Z in beginning to take over, the first generation which started international travel as a kid and regards going abroad as a normal part of their consumption patterns, supported by increased air connectivity, increased information available and decreased levels of visa formalities. Growing up as single kid in affluent families, they see their own emotions as an important part of the travel experience.
