What is Pat & Emilia? It is an opera for 2 sopranos, piano, clarinet, violin and cello, in 2 acts. Who are Pat and Emilia? Pat Sturn was the legendary portrait photographer in Windsor often compared to Y. Karsh. Emilia Cundari was an opera singer. Did they know each other? Yes, Pat Sturn did Emilia’s portrait. Pat adored opera, was known for listening to MET broadcasts every week ! How did the idea come about? Nadine (cellist in the ensemble and Windsor resident) asked Windsor Poet Laureate and friend Marty Gervais if he would write a poem which would be put into music. Because they were both friends with Pat Sturn who had recently died (at the age of 100) they thought of honouring her with a poem. Marty right away thought of having Emilia Cundari as a second character in his piece. His poem became soon a longer story which lead to the opera. How did you decide on a composer? We had heard some of Ontario composer Jeff Smallman’s songs and chamber music and performed several of his works. When we approached him he was delighted to be part of this project. How did you find the singers? We had heard Tara Sievers-Hunt sing and act in some contemporary music and thought she would be great for this piece. When the character of Emilia appeared in Marty’s text, she introduced us to Jocelyn Zelasko, and told us Jocelyn would make a great Pat and she (Tara) would be Emilia. Tara went on creating the first act where she incarnates Emilia. In this act, she sings opera arias from Emilia’s repertoire and her monologues are based on reviews and articles mostly from the Windsor Star newspaper. Who funded this project? We had fundraising events, several at Sho Art, Spirit and Performance, Caboto Club, we received private donations, and we received a grant from the City of Windsor as well as the University of Windsor. Did you perform the opera again after the premiere? Yes we did, in Detroit, Birmingham, Rochester Hills(MI), Toledo (OH, at the Art Gallery), Bayfield, Leamington, and even with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in Windsor and Leamington again. So, when are the 2018 performances? In St Catharines at Partridge Hall, Firstontario Performing Arts Center on March 23rd at 7:30pm In Toronto at College Street United Church on March 24th at 7:00pm In Windsor at Willistead Manor on April 5th at 8:00pm Do you have a website? a FB page? Yes: patandemilia.wixsite.com/opera https://www.facebook.com/patsturnproject/ If we have questions, is there an email address? Yes, of course: ndeleury@sympatico.ca
