Learn about Passive House performance-based building certification and get a chance to tour a Passive House project in Carmel-By-The-Sea. Katy Hollbacher of Beyond Efficiency, Inc. participated in the energy analysis of the project and will speak on how to achieve the Passive House standard, both in terms of planning and implementation. Rob Nicely of Carmel Building & Design, Inc. will explain his design-build firm's experience throughout the project and detail the construction methods, planning and record keeping throughout the project.
About the Speakers
Hollbacher, Founder and Principal of Beyond Efficiency Inc.
Principal and Founder Katy Hollbacher, P.E., is a licensed Civil Engineer in California and Wyoming, Certified Passive House Consultant, LEED Homes Rater, and Certified GreenPoint Rater with a Master of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of Michigan. She also holds California's Title 24 consultant credentials of Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) and Certified Energy Plans Examiner (CEPE).
Katy Hollbacher combines 13 years of practical experience with in-depth knowledge of technical practices and the green building marketplace to lead Beyond Efficiency in helping professionals integrate technical expertise, analytical tools, and common-sense best practices into their projects and standard business practices. She spent the preceding five years managing Build It Green's suite of technical information programs including the Ask an Expert green building hotline and Berkeley's Best Builders program. Katy was also an engineer at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, a national consulting firm specializing in the forensic investigation and repair of modern and historic structures, and has pounded nails, hung drywall, and pulled wires on various construction projects.

Rob has been working in the construction industry for 25 years. For the last 13 years he has worked at Carmel Building & Design, which he now owns. Carmel Building & Design is a residential design/build firm which has spent the last 8 years integrating sustainable practices into it’s method of building. CB&D has put 11 employees through the Certified Green Building Professional training provided by Build It Green. Rob has also worked with several community groups including The Sustainability Academy, Imagination Coast, and the Monterey County Building Council’s Competitive Clusters to create economic opportunities in the area of the sustainable economy. Rob is currently serving as president of the Monterey Bay Chapter of the National Association for the Remodeling Industry.
