Workshop overview

Context

Management of exploited, vulnerable, mobile species and their reproductive sites is a priority for environmental managers but often difficult to assess over vast areas. Regular and long-term standardized surveys are necessary to identify functional sites, assess population trends and their distribution.

The objective of the PAMGEST project is to promote Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) for management programs. The general aim is to offer MPAs the possibility of routinely using a replicable and standardized method based on PAM requiring low logistical and human effort to help improve the efficiency of management and conservation actions for the brown meagre (Sciaena umbra) and other vulnerable species such as the dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus).

Workshop objectives

The workshop is dedicated to environmental managers, members of MedPAN and scientists working in the conservation of endangered fish species. It will be held in Marseille (France) on April 8th 2020. The exact location will be announced. Based on a presentation of the results obtained from 3 large-scale (>100km) spatial surveys (summer 2019) and 1 biannual survey and the feedback of the partner MPAs, the objective of the workshop is to carry out a collaborative work to define a standardized PAM monitoring protocol and methodology to be implemented in surveillance and management programs.

The workshop also aims at widely disseminating the potential of PAM and at exchanging with MPA managers, field agents and scientists. The collective conclusions of the workshop will be used for the guide "Passive acoustic monitoring of the brown meagre: from measurement to management and conservation".
