About this event
Pre-Concert Lecture , 7:00 pm - Sarah Davies
The Song of Songs, is erotic, romantic, and poetically ravishing. It has always remained a mystery in the Hebrew and Christian Bibles with its celebration of the depth and beauty of romantic and sexual love. Over time, it was transformed into an allegory depicting the relationship first between God and Israel, and eventually Christ and the Church. In the Middle Ages, as the cult of the Virgin Mary rose to a more prominent position in western liturgical practice, the texts were adapted and found as the basis of texts for the Divine Office on feast days in honor of the mother of Christ. Composers across Europe composed eloquent settings of these otherworldly texts. Chosen appropriately as the final concert of the season, we invite you to join us for our season finale, a celebration of gardens, springtime, and above all, love in its many expressions.
