In 1997, a group of Brazilian volunteers founded the Centro Cultural Brasil-USA da Florida (CCBU), a non-profit organization (501.c.3), with the mission of disseminating Brazilian culture in South Florida and maintaining the national roots of the Brazilian children growing in this area. Twenty two years later, with the support of our members, collaborators, and sponsors, CCBU is a multi award-winning organization and a reference in Brazilian culture in South Florida’s multinational community.
We are proud to have been involved in the creation of the first bilingual, bi cultural English-Portuguese program with Brazilian content, in the American public school system, at Ada Merritt Elementary. The Brazil Pavilions created by CCBU at the Miami Book Fair International beautifully presented various aspects of our culture. The establishment of a scholarship fund in perpetuity for students fluent in Portuguese at Miami Dade College was a perfect celebration of our 10th Anniversary. Among many Brazilian cultural festivals, presented with the collaboration of local cultural organizations, we are specially proud of the exhibitions “12 Stadiums | 12 Cities: Brazil 2014, World Soccer Destination,”
a celebration of the diversity of Brazilian culture and architecture, at the Coral Gables Museum and “MIAMI MIX: How Brazil Became Part of Miami,” at the Miami Center for Architecture & Design, in 2017, which led to the City of Miami’s Proclamation designating September 5th as the “Centro Cultural Brasil-USA Day” in Miami.
On behalf of all volunteers who dreamed of using Brazilian Culture as a bridge between Brazil and Florida, I thank all those who supported and contributed to these twenty two successful years.
