Event description

Description

It’s hard to escape the cause of my younger brother’s death in the news these days. Simultaneously I’m filled with hope and sadness to watch the tide turn on how we perceive mental illness and suicide in our culture. As my husband has said, it is bittersweet that the world woke up and started paying attention on the heels of Jay losing his battle with mental illness. If he had just made it a few months later maybe he would have had hope for a future and a life beyond what his illness had took from him.

My world as owner of The Craft Studio, a children’s toy store and all event mecca, is one noted with sunshine, happiness, and parties to celebrate the sweet milestones of a person’s life. It is pure joy to be in a space filled with giggles, bright colors, and celebrations. Being the face for such a place is the reason I’ve had a hard time talking about what happened to my brother. It’s a dark cloud that changed everything for my family and took away something so precious and irreplaceable. Initially I worried acknowledging what happened to Jay would cause people to make judgments about who he was… that it may make them forget the beautiful, sweet, kind, super intelligent, accomplished young man that must have been in a living hell as his brain betrayed him.

I have known since Jay passed that I wanted and would one day be a voice for suicide prevention, mental health, and the memory of my little brother. I knew I wanted to be one that helped bring the stigma down and opened our eyes to the fact that mental illness affects all families in one way or another; that sickness in ones brain is no different than an illness that manifests in a liver, pancreas, or heart. While I am not quite sure what that voice and mission exactly look like… I know it starts somewhere.

That somewhere, is with my dear friend, Eryck Tait. This year, he has chosen to tackle the incredible task that is the NYC marathon and is running for suicide prevention. He too, has suffered the incredible pain that a death or threat of suicide leaves and has watched loved ones suffer. His fiancé, Rachel, a mental health professional, has also suffered losses to suicide and has helped my family understand that we are not alone in losing Jay from mental illness. Helping raise money for Eryck’s marathon charity is the perfect way to start helping and turning my hurt into healing for others.

On Wednesday October 24thwe will have a party. We will celebrate to help raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and to honor the beautiful and wonderful qualities of loved ones who lost their battle with mental illness. We will do karaoke, dance, have cocktails, craft and do joyful things that contribute to mental well being. We will celebrate life lost but also life prevented from loss. Most importantly we will celebrate kindness. Jay was remarkably kind in his trademark way even when he was suffering. Through Jay’s illness and death, I always tried to be kind, smile, and bring joy to others even though my family was falling apart. I often wonder…if we all showed a bit more kindness…what might happen? Let’s spread this kindness together.

All $50 of your event ticket cost will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
