Event description

Description

School leaders at MS 88 will frame this visit by sharing their vision that students will graduate able to engage in high-level academic discourse about all disciplines. In order to enact this vision, MS 88 has maximized a variety of partnerships to support strong literacy instruction across all content areas. This visit will highlight MS 88’s literacy-based partnerships with Reading Apprenticeship (RAAD), MS ExTRA, Wilson Reading Systems, and MSQI Debate to support students’ growth in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Participants will visit Science, Social Studies, and ELA classrooms to see similar literacy strategies implemented across different disciplines. The visit will include opportunities to interact with and hear from teachers and students to gain insight into ways MS 88 has fostered a culture in which all teachers see themselves as literacy teachers, and all classrooms build literacy skills. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn ways to infuse literacy into the school day beyond traditional content area instruction using community partnerships and creative programming.

This visit is recommended for those in positions of school leadership (as teachers or administrators), and it will highlight the Literacy Leadership portion of the MSQI Framework. The visit will also connect to several Quality Review indicators (1.3 Leveraging Resources, 1.4 Positive Learning Environment, and 4.2 Teacher Teams and Leadership Development) and all four domains of Danielson (with a particular emphasis on 1d Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources, 4d Participating in Professional Community, and 4e Growing and Developing Professionally).
