Description

Portland Professional/Emerging Writers' Partnered Reading Event

This is a partnered reading where publishing and book marketing professionals create work in response to, and inspired by, pieces from emerging authors. The readers have paired up and created together over the past couple months and each pair will read on stage at the OpenHaus. Idea is to connect more experienced authors with up and coming writers and promote creativity and mentorship.

All are welcome to attend this free public literary reading. We've got around 25 readers currently from all over the country and each person will read an original piece that's about 5-7 minutes long. Our lineup of readers is full at this point but we have plenty of room for audience members to come out and enjoy the many amazing performances!

This is organized by the people speaking on the Beyond Publicity panel at the Association of Writing Programs conference and takes place from 6pm to 9 30 pm Friday March 29th at the OpenHaus Coworking Space in Portland's North Alberta Arts neighborhood. This is on a bus line north from the convention center and the space's owners have confirmed that it is completely accessible.

We would love to see people attend this entire event, but coming late or leaving early is better than not coming at all!

This is a chance for professionals to read and consider, then engage with, work from the greater writing community. We welcomed and actively recruited all sorts of guest readers, including people from the POC, neurodiverse, LGBT, disabled, homeless and low-income and other marginalized communities to participate in this event.

So far the lineup of readers includes Elyana Ren, Alice Lavender Love, Yolanda Clay, Rebecca Smolen, Doug Hawley, Sherri Schultz, Crystal Stone, Gina DeVries, Claire Bateman, Dorothy Place, Sibylla Nash, Cati Porter, Mary Pan, Vannessa McClelland, Sione Aeschliman, Scott Parker, Sean Cearley, Huda Al-Marashi, Kelly Thompson, Robert Egan, J. Dorroh, Shahe Mankerian, Leah Griesmann, Mindy Ohringer, and Jasmin Johnson.

Also, Bonnie Greene, Melissa Moon, Lisa Loving and others will come and read some pieces by, and about, Portland writer and artist Tony LeTigre, who lived, created, and struggled here - and sadly passed away in a traffic accident January 19th: https://www.marinij.com/2019/01/22/greenbrae-mans-circle-stunned-by-freeway-cycling-death/

Here's the Facebook event page, RSVP is appreciated but not required: https://www.facebook.com/events/344609806131726/

Representing the Beyond Publicity panel will be:

Leticia Bradford, writing instructor, playwright, publishing entrepreneur with Bradford Productions, published poet and anthologist, and founder of B Street Writers, a large literary organization hosting readings and promoting the arts in Hayward, California.

Cristina Deptula, creator of Synchronized Chaos Magazine (synchchaos.com), a 10-year-old international cultural publication accepting writing every month. Also the founder of book PR firm Authors, Large and Small, (authorslargeandsmall.com) a green business bringing those with barriers to employment aboard to do traditional and social media book PR.
Lisa Loving, who has been a journalist her entire life, writing community news, investigative series, features, reviews and columns. A few years ago she moved into electronic media, including radio, webcasting and computer-based digital video.
Her new book, Street Journalist, out last winter from Microcosm Publishing, is a journalism how-to book for non-journalists, and she is building out classes to go along with it. This involves a LOT of begging professional journalists for interviews on ethics and technique.
She is also the host of a news and public affairs radio show called 'Democracy in Motion,' which airs on KBOO Community Radio every second Friday at 9am. And, she is the retired host of Wednesday Talk Radio, on www.kboo.fm. You can also look for her current author interviews there on Between the Covers.

There will be a potluck. Bringing food and drinks is wonderful but completely optional, and enjoying the food and drinks there is mandatory, lol :) No need to bring anything but yourself, and not bringing food isn't a reason not to go :)
