Event Details

Increasing evidence shows health impacts from particulate matter (PM) can occur well below the current national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS). As impacts in our communities increase with our changing climate, it is important that we reassess the health effects of PM.

This year, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Advisory Council will be convening a four-part conference series on PM to facilitate a discussion among nationally recognized scientists, stakeholders, and the Air District to identify the most effective measures to further protect public health. The symposia will shine a spotlight on this public health challenge and share information and tools to inform future policy decisions.

The first symposium in the series will take place on October 28, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, at the Bay Area Metro Center, 375 Beale Street, San Francisco, California.

For more information visit our PM Conference page.

If you are unable to attend, you can view webcast here.

Topics will include:

  • PM health effects: What health effects are observed from PM exposure. What biological systems are affected. What is known about the mechanisms. What population groups are most at risk. What sensitivities and uncertainties are most relevant.
  • PM exposure and risk: What is known about PM emissions and sources. What PM levels are in the air. What exposures occur in communities. What is the current understanding of PM health risks. What are the economic and other costs.
