Welcome to the event info for the premier bike maintenance course in Christchurch, New Zealand.
This 10 hour course is based on the world renowned bike maintenance curriculum designed by Park Tool from the US. The key reference book, which is highly recommended for the course, is called the Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair and is without equal in the industry.
Tony Bethell is the tutor for the course and is a highly experienced mechanic as well as a passionate biker himself. His tales from life in the army, as a super bike mechanic and from his years of racing and wrenching make the evenings and fun and enjoyable way to learn about bike maintenance.
Over a series of 5 weeks (2 hour evening sessions), you will cover the following topics:
- Basic mechanical skills
- Tyres and Tubes
- Rear sprockets
- Trailside wheel truing
- External and internal gear systems
- Rim and disc brake systems
- Rim brake systems
- Handlebars, stems, saddles and seatposts
- Frames and forks

Can I bring my own bike and work on it during the course? Yes! We provide stands so you can work on your bike. If you don't have a bike to bring, don't worry there are plenty of bits and pieces available to learn on.
Do I need to bring my own tools? No, however please feel free to bring your tools as it is always good to learn how to use them. If you don't have tools, don't worry, we have sets available for you to use.
Can we buy the relevant tools required? Yes, Park Tool provide a select number of tools available to course attendees at a highly discounted rate as a bonus of attending the course.
Is this course suitable for beginners? Yes, the course is suitable for novices and the low number of participants ensures you get a chance to ask lots of questions and get guidance.
The dates don’t suit. Do you have other options? Check with us as we run 4 courses a year. We also are able to accommodate pre-organised groups of a minumum of 5 people at other times.
What is the minimum number of participants for the course to go ahead? We require 5 people for the course to proceed.
What happens if the course doesn’t run? You will receive a full refund, less any credit card processing fees paid to Eventbrite.
What is the minimum age of participants? Young adults at high school and older are welcome to attend.
