Event description

Description

Join us for a great exploration of nature through a tree inventory and tour of this Civil War fortification north of the Anacostia.

Spend your Saturday morning at the intersection of science and history inventorying trees at this Civil War landmark. Afterward, we’re teaming up with historian and park ranger Phan of the National Park Service for a tour of this earthwork fort.

Tree Inventory

We will be documenting tree species, height, trunk diameter, crown width, and health to inform the management of this green space. Arborists need our help, so come put your tree skills to the test!

Participants will receive a short, hands-on training on-site. After learning the tools and techniques participants will split into groups and begin measuring trees from 9 AM – 12 PM. After all your hard work, light refreshments will be served before historian and park ranger Phan will help us explore the complex history that extends far beyond the battlefield.

Who Should Attend?
Open to the general public, you do not need any prior experience to join us. If you have participated in any CT classes this will be a great way to put your knowledge into action!

Come Prepared
We will plan to conduct the inventory rain or shine so please wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes for walking short distances. Participants are welcome to bring water and a snack.

Getting There
Fort Lincoln is located in Northeast D.C. Carpooling or Rideshare is the easiest and most convenient way to get to this space. Metrobuses B8, B9, H6 all stop nearby. Brookland is the closest Metro station but still a 15-minute drive away.

Where to Meet
We will meet near the Pools/Cultural Center. Be on the lookout for the green and white Casey Trees table. Participants will be emailed a detailed map closer to the inventory date.

Meals
Light refreshments will be provided.
