What to Avoid with Young Athletes:The Risks of Early Specialization & Unrealistic Expectations

This free seminar is hosted by Dr. Joshua Scott, Dr. Chrsitopher Fulton, & Devin Markle, M.Ed., CMPC, and is aimed to help parents of athletes. Being a parent of an athlete is exciting, busy, and even challenging at times. This lecture is designed to help understand proper physical and emotional training techniques to help young athletes reach peak performance. The doctors will discuss tips for parents of athletes ranging from ages 5-18. Parents of all sports are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there!

Speakers

Dr. Joshua Scott is a Board Certified specialist in Sports Medicine with over a decade of experience treating athletes in Southern California. He specializes in acute and chronic injuries with a special interest in pediatric and adult fracture management, concussions, and musculoskeletal injections. The spectrum of his practice includes non-athletes, weekend warriors, professional athletes, and elite athletes of all ages.

Dr. Scott works closely with professional athletes and Olympians in the community and serves as the lead primary care physician for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He has worked with the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials and provides event coverage for high school and professional athletes alike. Dr Scott’s background in sports and his personal experiences afford him insight in his unique approach to patient care. Being a former Division I NCAA athlete himself, Dr. Scott truly understands the physical and mental aspects of sports in his patients and incorporates these perspectives in his treatment approach.
Dr. Scott actively participates in Continuing Medical Education programs and provides education for primary care providers on a regional and national level.

Dr. Christopher Fulton has been a licensed clinical psychologist since 1996 and has been working in the mental health field since 1990. He received his doctorate in 1994 from the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles (CSPP, LA). His degree was in community-clinical psychology and his training was in family and child psychotherapy. Dr. Fulton has a group practice, Fulton Psychological Group, which includes over 10 therapists who range in work from individual, group, couples therapy as well as psychiatric services and neuropsychological testing.

Dr. Fulton provides consultation and ongoing therapy for children, adolescents and adults as well as athletes. He conducts group, individual, couples and family therapy and actively works with a variety of childhood disorders, including: adjustment disorder, ADHD, anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant and other emotional-behavioral disorders.

Dr. Fulton is a father of two. His daughter plays Division I Volleyball and his son is a high-school student athlete.

Devin Markle, M.Ed., CMPC is a registered Psychological Assistant (PSB94024045) with Fulton Psychological Group under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Fulton (PSY14741). She earned her Master’s degree in Counseling and Sport Psychology from Boston University. Following her training at Boston University, Devin earned certification by the Association of Applied Sport Psychology. Devin is completing her Psy.D. from California Southern University. She is also an Adjunct Faculty Member at California Lutheran University teaching the Introduction to Sport Psychology course.

Devin has worked with individuals and teams to achieve their full potential both on and off the field. She has experience working with youth development programs through Olympic and Professional level athletes. She has developed curriculums for NFL and NBA pre-draft classes with athletes continuing their work with her after joining a professional team. It is her continued enthusiasm and love of sports that fuel her commitment to work with athletes in the pursuit of their goals.

Devin was a member of the University of Vermont, Division 1 Women’s Lacrosse team and still loves to be a part of the game. Her personal experience offers a unique understanding of the demands and mindset of a student-athlete.
