If you are a parent of a child aged 2-18, you are eligible to join the Parenting the Positive Discipline Way Research Study. The Positive Discipline Association, in cooperation with Eva Dreikurs Ferguson from Southern Illinois University (and daughter of Rudolph Dreikurs, author of Children: The Challenge), is conducting a study on the effectiveness of parent training.
Workshops are on Tuesdays from 7:00 p.m. -.9:00 p.m. at Urban Montessori School in Oakland, 5328 Brann Street.
Workshop dates are February 21 – March 28 OR April 18 – May 23. While you will ultimately get assigned to only one session of the class, you must be able to attend every class of either session.
There are also two brief required assessment sessions when the entire family, including all parents and children, will fill out short questionnaires. These sessions will be scheduled at a family’s convenience in January and late March/early April on either Thursday evenings or Saturdays. During these two sessions, that will take less than half an hour, we ask all family members to fill out questionnaires (young children will be assisted by one of our certified trainers). Families must be able to attend both assessment sessions in order to participate in the parenting workshop.
These trainings are a really fun way to learn concrete and helpful parenting tools while intentionally creating an atmosphere of caring in the often frustrating role of parent. The study is an important piece in creating research-based evidence around what is already known anecdotally to be highly effective.
