About this Event

Professional Credits:

  • 22 standard & 2 ethics CLE applied for
  • 24 Rule 114 CE credits applied for
  • 27 MN Board MFT approved CE credits

This 4-day training is designed to teach the basics of the Parenting Time Expediting (PTE) and Parenting Consulting (PC) processes, while clarifying the distinctions between PTE and PC services in Minnesota, and highlighting the similarities. The trainers will introduce the standards, protocols and best practices for PTE and PC processes, provide examples of applicable statutes and rules, and discuss the importance of model appointing orders and model fee agreements for both services. The training also includes Rule 114 provisions and ethics (current and proposed), court decisions pertaining to PTE and PC, issues that arise and techniques for addressing them, drafting summaries and decisions, domestic abuse in the context of PTE and PC, and best practices for conducting these often challenging processes.

Experienced trainers and ADR practitioners Karen Irvin, PhD, LMFT, and Andrea Niemi, JD, instruct participants on handling high conflict parents through the PTE and PC processes. Trainers will cover:

  • The roles of the Parenting Time Expeditor (PTE) and the Parenting Consultant (PC), and the differences between the two distinct roles,
  • Family dynamics in separation and divorce,
  • Developmental needs of children,
  • Emotional and psychological dynamics of parents and children in high conflict situations,
  • The PTE statute, Minn. Stat. § 518.1751
  • Sample documents relevant to the processes, such as appointing orders,
  • Orienting parties to the process,
  • Managing the processes, including decision making,
  • Fees and billing,
  • Protocols, standards and best practices, and
  • Avoiding and handling complaints.

Please note: the PTE and PC Training sessions are now one combined training. It has been the trainers’ experience that it is imperative that neutrals clearly understand the distinctions between the two, even if you don’t anticipate providing both services. As prior members of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Ethics Board, Andrea and Karen have seen the results of confusion for professionals engaged in the providing services, for parties in need of the services, and for courts issuing orders for services. You will be much better prepared to practice as a PTE, a PC, or both, with this training.

Prerequisite: 40-Hour Family Mediation Training
