"Peer Relationships in the Age of Social Media" - a presentation by author Rachel Simmons
Wednesday, April 19 at 7 p.m.
Although educator and author Rachel Simmons is best-known for The Curse of the Good Girl: Raising Authentic Girls with Courage and Confidence, her research-based strategies are appropriate for all children and the issues of psychological aggression.
The focus on bullying in girls, while long overdue, has obscured the dynamics of psychological aggression that unfold between boys. In fact, research has shown a shrinking gender gap in behaviors like relational aggression, especially by middle school. Adolescent boys are telling researchers that relational and social aggression - actions that damage friendship and reputation - concern them more than physical intimidation.
Simmons will directly address:
relational aggression (the use of friendship as a weapon)
gossip and rumors
the silent treatment and aggressive body language
the use of humor in aggression
This presentation will provide adults with guidance and strategies to help children navigate the relationships in their lives.
