Event description

Description

The Parents' Coalition and Southwest Gas are happy to present the first annual Parent University! The theme for this year's Parents' University is "This Functional Family", it is a twist on "dysfunctional family". Throughout the year we will offer workshops/sessions that cover issues that might make a family a bit dysfunctional. Let's face it. There is no such thing as a "perfect" family. So, the point is to use the resources we have to try and become better functioning familial units. We will kick off the sessions with this mini-conference. And the conference is FREE!

Exciting! And of course, we will continue to have "Munch and Learns" throughout the year where we continue to address issues and topics that are important to our community parents. Mental health, childhood depression, suicide prevention, volunteer training, bullying prevention, internet safety and healthy communication skills are some of the topics you have given us and we will be addressing some of these during this year's "Munch and Learns". Breakfast and lunch is provided. We are excited to announce that through the donations of generous supporters and collaboration with A Mother's Love Home Daycare Center, we will be able to provide daycare services on a first come first serve basis to some of our conference attendees.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our keynote speaker is Mrs. Jacqui Clay, Cochise County School Superintendent. She is giving a "True Colors" workshop to help parents understand their personalities and how our personalities affect the way we communicate with others, especially our children.

Additionally, we have Mary Perez of the Sierra Vista Public Education Network, providing a session on Education Funding Issues in Arizona. How did we get to where we are, how it affects our children's education experience and our communities. What can parents do?

Kristy Beerman of the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Sierra Vista is giving a class called Positive Discipline. It empowers parents to positively manage child behavior while also encouraging the development of healthy skills in children.

Dr. Da'Mond Holt is a Bullying Prevention Specialist who will give a class on Trauma and how it affects behaviors. His experience in the area of bullying and trauma-informed practices helps parents learn how to stop simply responding to behaviors and to manage and even prevent the issues/causes of those behaviors.

Stephanie Thomas of the Sierra Vista Parents' Coalition is leading a session on school and community engagement. It's called "Put a Ring on it!" Why is being engaged so important and how can parents take their relationships with schools to the next level. And at the end of the day, during lunch, we will have a panel discussion with some local school board members who have graciously agreed to come and answer our parents questions in our community table session.
