Parent University is a special series of educational workshops targeted for the parents and families of Renaissance TRIO (Upward Bound and Talent Search) participants. It is the opportunity for parents, students, and the community to work together to help prepare potential first-generation college students for postsecondary education.
Workshops offered during the Parent University series for the 2016-2017 program year are aligned to the five (5) areas of financial capabilities, namely: Earn (e.g. understanding a paycheck, deductions, taxes and workplace benefits, etc.), Spend (e.g. setting financial goals, tracking spending habits, developing a budget, etc.), Save and Invest (e.g. saving early, paying oneself first, building an emergency savings account, etc.), Borrow (e.g. planning, understanding and shopping around for a loan with the lowest interest rate, how to use credit wisely, etc.), and Protect (choosing appropriate insurance, consulting a qualified professional for help, detecting scams, etc.).
PARENTS and students will engage in interactive discussions with representatives from state government agencies, credit unions, and banking institutions to talk about personal financial decision making and the value of money using the financial capabilities from the Making the Most of Money Model.
