Notes on Katie Hurley's newly released book, No More Mean Girls:

Mean Girls is not just a funny Lindsay Lohan film with a cult following. In today’s fast-paced world, mean girl culture begins much earlier than high school. For many children (and consequently, their worried parents), it’s a day-to-day reality that can manifest itself in the form of social exclusion, gossip and rumors, or public humiliation. While we often view childhood as a more carefree time to forge friendships, too many young girls today hate school because they experience stress, social anxiety, or depression. Slights experienced in childhood can leave emotional scars that last a lifetime. While we may traditionally associate bullying with older kids, the fact is that very young girls (think preschoolers on up) are struggling with these problems without the necessary skills to cope.

At a time when headlines are highlighting just how important it is to teach girls to grow into strong women who stand up for themselves, parents and schools need to teach young girls as early as elementary school age how to be assertive and resilient.

NO MORE MEAN GIRLS: The Secret to Raising Strong, Confident, and Compassionate Girls (on sale January 30, 2018; TarcherPerigee Paperback; ISBN-13: 9780143130864) by Katie Hurley, LCSW is a guide for parents of girls as young as age three to help their daughters confront relational aggression, societal pressure, and low self-esteem. Hurley provides compelling research findings, balanced with anecdotes and actionable steps that parents can take with their daughter to help them to:

  • Develop friendships and healthy relationships

  • Build self-esteem and find the courage to stand up for themselves and others

  • Manage stress and release negative energy and thoughts without hurting others

  • Establish habits early on to become socially responsible leaders who work together to positively change the way we “grow up girl.”

While it’s alarming to realize that deeply entrenched societal problems are impacting our youngest citizens, the good news is that these young girls are seeking help from mom and dad. NO MORE MEAN GIRLS is the Lean In for girls’ self-esteem and a must-have handbook to help parents empower their girls to be strong, confident, and compassionate.

Many thanks to Charles River School for hosting. They will be offering a tour before the lecture for those interested in learning about the school.
