Description

Describing the Parent-Child Dyad: How to Measure a Relationship

By: Barbara Stroud, PhD

In the first five years of life the parent-child relationship is fundamental in supporting optimal development, mitigating early risk factors and healing trauma. This training session will help service providers observe and describe interactions which support or hamper development. In addition providers will learn strategies they can share with parents that will promote attunement, social emotional development and emotional regulation.

Following this training participants will be able to:

  • Name the optimal and at-risk elements of a parent-child interaction within the birth to five population
  • Define for parents the behaviors that support attunement, developmentally appropriate discovery, and emerging stress recovery skills
  • Integrate family cultural values into their assessment of functional vs atypical parent-child interactions
  • Describe the ‘Psychological Task of Childhood’ as an ongoing tool for parents and providers to assess developmental success
  • Demonstrate for parents relationship skills that promote development
  • Outline treatment goals focused on family functioning which include relationship-based interventions.
