Event description
Discussion of Fair Labor Standards Act and U.S. Department of Labor's July 2019 opinion on whether paralegals are exempt from overtime

About this Event

In 2004, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) revised its Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) exemptions and confirmed that paralegals were non-exempt employees. That meant that paralegals who worked more than 40 hours per week should be paid overtime.

On May 18, 2016, the DOL published the long-awaited changes to the overtime rules which dramatically increased the minimum salary that an employee must receive in order to be exempt from overtime pay.

On July 1, 2019, the DOL issued an opinion letter based on a trade organization's request for review to determine whether paralegals were exempt from overtime pay under the "highly compensated employee" exemption. So are paralegals exempt from overtime pay or not?

Come join our discussion led by attorney Laura Balson on overtime pay as it relates to paralegals. Whether you are in-house or in a law firm, you won't want to miss this important discussion!

Laura Balson is a partner at the Chicago law firm of Golan Christie Taglia LLP where she practices in the areas of employment law and commercial litigation. Laura represents both employers and individual executives and entrepreneurs and has tried cases in state and federal courts. She frequently analyzes and negotiates employment and separation agreements for her clients and speaks on a wide variety of employment law topics. She is co-chair of a coalition of women’s groups who put on the annual Equal Pay Day event at Daley Center Plaza in downtown Chicago. The event aims to raise awareness of the wage gap. Laura graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 2005 and received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Bates College in 2001, magna cum laude.

Laura and her husband, an independent book publisher, live in Skokie with their two small children.

Chicago Paralegal Network's mission is to provide a statewide voice for paralegals in Illinois, to monitor developments in the paralegal profession, and to promote paralegals and the paralegal profession.
