AM 1 Applying a Trauma-Sensitive Lens to De-escalation: Cultivating Safe and Supportive School Environments /20-02-122-001
In this session, participants will gain an understanding of trauma, its prevalence in children, and impacts on schools and classrooms. The session will cover the common symptoms or signs of trauma exposure that may be present in students, and explore the seven stages in the cycle: calm, trigger, agitation, acceleration, peak, de-escalation, and recovery.

In this session, participants will define and give examples of linguistic input and output; identify Sheltered Instruction strategies used to make input more comprehensible to English learners; identify Sheltered Instruction strategies used to elicit output from students in speech and writing; and exchange ideas about their best communication and collaboration practices with classroom teachers of the students they serve.

Audience: Paraeducators, Teachers and Service Providers, Administrators, and Directors of Special Education

Description: 

The Paraeducator Development and Leadership Symposium will be a valuable professional learning opportunity for Paraeducators, as well as a time to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions Paraeducators make to the successful education experiences of so many Connecticut students. CT’s District Paraeducators-of-the-Year will be honored during lunch, which is included with registration.

Personnel from the RESC Alliance will be facilitating professional learning sessions aligned to the State Board of Education’s Five-Year Comprehensive Plan: "Ensuring Equity and Excellence for All Connecticut Students." Sessions will include: Becoming a Member of the Special Education Team; Cultivating a Culturally Responsive Learning Environment; Applying a Trauma-Sensitive Lens to De-Escalation; Students Learning English, Paraeducator Strategies; Paraeducator Participation in the IEP Meeting; and Strategies to Increase Social Emotional Learning.
