About this event
HAPPENING Knowledge Sharing
Alebrijes are figurines of imaginary animals and one of the most popular representations of Mexican Folk Art.
In this workshop, we will build a simplified alebrije from scratch using only white glue, newspaper, and masking tape. Afterwards, we will paint it with acrylic paints, decorate it, and add varnish.
Public: youth and adults

About the artist:
Ana Gabriela Lopez Castro is an active exponent of Mexican art and culture throughout the presentation of her artistic and handcrafted work known as the Alebrijes, fantastic figures created of paper maché.
Her artistic formation started in the areas of photography and printmaking in 2000, where she first found the best way to express her voice. In 2019, she founded Emotionart collective art group to bring intergenerational art workshops to Toronto community housing buildings, initially for seniors to break the isolation they may be experiencing, and to rebuild their communities again.
About the Festival:
HAPPENING Multicultural Festival is the first and only Toronto festival created by community artists, giving center-stage to the talent and skills of immigrant, newcomer, and refugee artists. This multi-arts platform includes music, dance, visual arts, community-engaged arts, storytelling, spoken word, and poetry. HAPPENING gives space to embrace the cultural richness of our city, while creating professional development opportunities for artists, as well as offering a platform for organizations to connect, and form meaningful collaborations.
