Calling all young artists and scientists: Panorama is back at Olana State Historic Site during the month of July! Panorama provides two week-long youth summer learning programs for ages 6-13, July 10-21, Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-3:00 pm. The programs are delivered by certified teachers and museum educators; they provide a wide range of activities from hands-on experiments to building paper sculpture. All activities are designed to be educational, and yet everything is linked to creative play and discovery. Discounts are available for early registration. Registration costs $200 per week before March 17, $260 per week after March 17.

Week One | July 10-14

Panorama: Real and Imagined Eco-Landscapes
Wagon House Education Center; Ages 6-13

The Olana Partnership works in collaboration with the Taconic Outdoor Education Center to bring you this camp for youth who love exploring nature; and who imagine and invent places and spaces. Frederic E. Church loved fictional stories of faraway places, nature, and ecology and dreamed up his own landscape from a drawing and an idea. This camp will be led by seasoned environmental educators who have a number of fun-filled experiments and expeditions planned inside Olana’s 250 acres. We will also make miniature landscapes, and learn to identify clouds to name just a few of many activities. This weeklong program is place-based learning, plus a whole lot of play and imagination at work and completely new activities never before presented at Olana. Space is limited to 30.

Week Two | July 17-21
Panorama: Paper Art
Wagon House Education Center; Ages 6-13

In the ever growing digitization of culture, paper becomes more and more of a sidelined material in our youth’s lives. In Frederic Church’s lifetime paper was the form of all communication, it was exotic, precious, incredible, and a material that drove so much childhood play and adventure. We will delve deeply into the history of paper, borrow from the 19th century children’s work and from many cultures around the world to make decorative pulp papers, paper dolls, paper cutouts, papier-mâché, pop up books, kites, decoupage, and so much more. This week-long program will turn paper into magic and create marvelous skills with paper. Space is limited to 30.
