Please join us for a panel discussion on Sarah Charlesworth with Jennifer Blessing, Margot Norton, and James Welling at 5pm on Thursday March 7th at 524 West 26th Street.

The conversation will explore Charlesworth’s work on the occasion of the artist's one-person exhibition at Paula Cooper Gallery. On view from February 23 through March 23, the show focuses on Charlesworth’s rarely exhibited work from the late 1970s to early '80s. Beginning with her series, Modern History, and continuing through her Red Collages, the selection marks a pivotal period in which the artist merged the photo-conceptual strategies of her early education with those of quotation, appropriation, and re-photography that would come to define the Pictures Generation. This is the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery.

Jennifer Blessing is Senior Curator, Photography, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. She is responsible for developing the Guggenheim’s photography collection as well as organizing photography-based exhibitions. Most recently, Blessing curated “Photo-Poetics: An Anthology”, prior to which she organized the NY monographic shows of Carrie Mae Weems, Rineke Dijkstra, Francesca Woodman, and Catherine Opie. In 2010, Blessing’s exhibition, “Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance”, featured Sarah Charlesworth’s Herald Tribune: November 1977, which was acquired for the Guggenheim’s collection.

Margot Norton is Curator at the New Museum. She joined the New Museum in 2011 and has curated and co-curated exhibitions with Judith Bernstein, Pia Camil, Roberto Cuoghi, Ragnar Kjartansson, Sarah Lucas, Chris Ofili, Goshka Macuga, Nathaniel Mellors, Laure Prouvost, Pipilotti Rist, Anri Sala, Kaari Upson, and Erika Vogt; and group exhibitions “The Keeper,” “Here and Elsewhere,” and “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star.” In 2015, Norton co-curated the first major survey exhibition in New York of Sarah Charlesworth’s work “Sarah Charlesworth: Doubleworld,” which traveled to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in 2017. In October 2017, she curated “Sequences VIII: Elastic Hours,” the Eighth Sequences Real Time Art Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland, and she is currently working on an exhibition for the Georgian Pavillion at the 2019 Venice Biennale with artist Anna K.E.. At the New Museum, she will curate the first US survey exhibition of artist Mika Rottenberg, opening in June 2019, and was recently appointed co-curator with Jamillah James of the 2021 New Museum Triennial. She has contributed to and edited numerous publications and exhibition catalogues, and regularly lectures on contemporary art and curating. She holds a MA in Curatorial Studies from Columbia University, New York.

James Welling was born in 1951 in Hartford, Connecticut. He studied at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh before receiving his BFA and MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. Recent solo presentations include Metamorphosis, which traveled from the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (SMAK), Ghent, to Kunstforum Wien, Vienna (2017); “Things Beyond Resemblance: James Welling Photographs,” Brandywine River Museum of Art, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania (2015); “Diary of Elizabeth and James Dixon, 1840–41/Connecticut Landscapes, 1977–86,” Art Institute of Chicago (2014); “Autograph,” Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland (2013); and the major survey “Monograph,” which was presented at the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, in 2013 and was accompanied by a catalogue published by Aperture.

Sarah Charlesworth was born in 1947 in New Jersey, lived and worked in New York, and died in 2013 in Connecticut. She earned an associate degree from Bradford Junior College in Massachusetts (1965-67), where she studied with artist Douglas Huebler, and a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College in Manhattan (1967-69). Charlesworth’s work has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at a number of institutions including a major survey exhibition, “Sarah Charlesworth: Doubleworld,” at the New Museum, New York (2015), which travelled to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2017); and a retrospective organized by SITE Santa Fe (1997), which travelled to the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (1998), the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC (1998), and the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art (1999). In 2014, Charlesworth’s Stills series was presented for the first time in its entirety at the Art Institute of Chicago (2014). Her work was recently included in “Brand New: Art and Commodity in the 1980s” at The Hirshhorn Museum, Washington (2018). Other past group exhibitions include: the 77th Whitney Biennial, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2014); “Shock of the News,” National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (2012); “Signs of a Struggle: Photography in the Wake of Postmodernism,” the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2011); “September 11,” the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2011); “The Last Newspaper,” the New Museum, New York (2010); “The Pictures Generation, 1974–1984,” the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2009); and “The Last Picture Show: Artists Using Photography 1960-1982,” the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2004). Charlesworth taught photography for many years at the School of Visual Arts, New York; the Rhode Island School of Design; and Princeton University.
