Description

The Suffragettes : Millennial Rebels at Islington Arts Factory - PANEL DISCUSSION Monday 19th March 2018, 7pm - 9pm.

Join milliner and designer Claire Strickland and fine art Wet Plate Photographer Nicolas Laborie for a panel discussion chaired by Anna McNay (art writer and editor), with special guests Dr Diane Atkinson (author and historian), Vanessa Woolf (professional storyteller) and Tilda Lewis (costumier, milliner and one of the millennial rebels who portrayed Emmeline Pankhurst in our series).

Through the discussion we will look at the role of artists, creativity and storytelling to bring to life the figures of the past and connect with the young people of today.

This discussion is part of the exhibition 'The Suffragettes : Millennial Rebls' which runs from 16th - 23rd March 2018 at Islington Arts Factory. The unique series of Wet Plate Collodion photography and specially designed and crafted hats and millinery celebrates the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918, the Act which granted some women over 30 the vote in the UK. This was the first time women had voted in the UK.

Information about the venue:

Islington Arts Factory is a converted church building opposite the entrance to HM Holloway Prison, the prison where the Suffragettes were imprisoned in the early 20th century. It provides over fifty educational courses in art, dance and music for children and adult learners. Islington Arts Factory believes that creativity should be undertaken for its own sake and that active involvement in the arts encourages positive personal growth throughout life and fosters social cohesion.

There is no miniumum age requirement for the event. It is not easy to park around the venue and public transport is recommended. Islington Arts Factory is a 10 minute walk from Caledonian or Holloway tube stations. If coming by bus you can take the 4, 17, 29, 43, 91, 153, 253, 259, 271, 279, 359. If you are a wheel chair user or have any other access building requirements please get in touch. The exhibition is on the ground floor of Islington Arts Factory but it would be great to know to expect you so that we can make sure that the building is easy to access.

Got any questions we haven't answered here? Contact Nicolas Laborie on info@nicolaslaborie.com or Claire Strickland on claire@clairestrickland.com.

We look forward to seeing you at the panel discussion.
