Event Details

A whole category of social photo platforms -- think Instagram and Hipstamatic -- is built around digitally mimicking the unique look of images made with toy and other lo-fi cameras. Light leaks, blur, and vignetted corners are almost clichéd characteristics of toy camera images, but they're only a small part of the story, and faking it digitally offers little satisfaction to photographers interested in the bigger picture. The element of chance introduced by toy cameras' simple optics, and the ability to shoot film -- especially medium format -- with an inexpensive, lightweight camera, are just two of the many things drawing more and more people to toy cameras.

Join artists Bill Franson, James Rohan, Meg Birnbaum, and Liz Ellenwood as they talk about the appeal of working with inexpensive plastic cameras and lenses, how they decide to use toy cameras for particular projects, the pleasures and perils of limited exposure controls, and much more.

This panel discussion is part of the Somerville Toy Camera Festival.
