This event will explore complexities of choosing an elementary school in San Francisco. Every year, as preschool parents navigate the kindergarten admissions and lottery processes, they face a plethora of possibilities, roadblocks, hurdles and even complicated personal and political choice when choosing a school.

In a panel discussion and Q and A session, we will explore how fear and fantasy get tangled up in the process of choosing a school. At the forefront of our conversation: How can we gain clarity on our hopes, values, and priorities as we reflect on what might work for our own families, will be at the forefront of this discussion. This is NOT a 'how to' lecture, but a collection of professional and personal stories and responses that we hope will spur reflection and questions as you navigate this process.

Please bring your thoughts and questions for this dynamic conversation!

Our panel of experts will include:

Darcy Campbell — Darcy is director of Cow Hollow School, a lecturer in early childhood and elementary education at San Francisco State University, founder of The COLLABORATORY, a child advocate, and a parent and teacher coach. Darcy's daughter attended public school for nine years before attending an independent school in San Francisco.

Gail Cornwall — Gail writes about education, parenting, and children as a freelancer for the national glossy Parents, as well as The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among others. She was a higher-ed lawyer and a public-school teacher before working as a stay-at-home mother of three. These days, she lives part-time with five kids ages 5 to 15, who attend three San Francisco schools, including Rooftop School.

Tracey Gersten — Tracey is director of admissions at Live Oak School, an independent school in San Francisco. Tracey's son attended independent school for nine years before attending a public school in San Francisco.

Jen Lumanlan — Jen is a parent coach and the creator and host of "Your Parenting Mojo" — a bimonthly podcast that makes research on child development and education accessible and useful to parents. She holds master's degrees in education and in psychology (with a focus on child development). She lives in Berkeley with her family, and is preparing to homeschool her five-year-old daughter.

Miranda Martin — Miranda is director of policy for Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco, as well as a former Cow Hollow School parent. Miranda's children have attended both public and independent schools in San Francisco.
