Legacy Chicago craftsman and Kranky torchbearer Mark Nelson’s latest offering as PAN•AMERICAN is less a distillation or divergence than it is a return to his musical and spiritual beginnings. Spare, subdued, and largely acoustic, 'A Son' unfurls like late summer dusk on the edge of town, expansive but intimate. The emphasis on uncluttered arrangements and the centrality of the guitar and vocals reveal these songs as the most direct and emotional statement of his career. After decades of mining post-rock pathways and latticework electronics in LABRADFORD and early PAN•AMERICAN, 'A Son' strips away ornament and distraction in favor of a direct gaze into the heart of what is.
CLEARED is the duo of percussionist Steven Hess and guitarist Michael Vallera. Since 2009 the project has released a series of records on various labels and performed sparingly in North America. While their discography explores many facets and interpretations of minimalist composition and repetitive themes, at heart CLEARED is centered on the construction of a language and structural system between two musicians concerned with patience and environmental sound. Currently arranging their first record in nearly three years, CLEARED has begun playing once again in 2019 and will continue into the next decade with select performances and the release of new material.
