Description

This training event is to educate Palo Alto ACS: ARES/RACES and ham operators on the use of communications equipment in our Emergency Services Volunteer Division Operations Center (ESV DOC).

Training Objectives include:

1. Understand how room D4 is set up. What equipment is there and what it is used for.

2. Review documentation (binders, information, radio manuals) for the radio stations.

3. Cover the power systems in place.

4. Describe antennas being used.

5. Operations of the Kenwood Radios.

o Basic characteristics – dual band, dual monitoring, etc.

o How to read the GUI (graphic user interface), basic menu functions. [Advanced functions could be covered in a later class]

o Program a frequency

o Change channels

o Switch the operating channel from the right display to the left display, and vice versa.

6. Operations of the MURS radios – power, turn on/turn off, change channel, turn up / turn down volume.

As time allows we'll conduct a practical exercise where teams of two do a few ‘functions tests’ on both Kenwood and MURS radios.
