Event description

Description

This October, the Open Space Authority will be opening up the currently by-reservation-only Palassou Ridge preserve to members of the public for walking and mountain biking!

Protected in 1999, the 3,524-acre Palassou Ridge connects Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park to Henry Coe State Park. This preserve has deep, wooded canyons and rolling grassy hills as well as important habitat for California red-legged frogs and California tiger salamanders. The property also contains a historic stone house and was a campsite for the Anza Expedition.

Palassou Ridge offers 12 miles of easy, moderate, and difficult trails to explore for hikers and mountain bikers of all fitness and experience levels! Download the trail map HERE (Please note that Palassou Ridge is not open year-round, but you can request a special access docent-led event on our website).

Parking & Registration

Registration is by the parking space. You are free to bring as many friends and family as can legally and safely fit in your car. Parking will be located at the Hunting Hollow Entrance of Henry W. Coe State Park, just across the road from the preserve's main entrance (look for special event signage). Parking is free for this special-access event!

Gates will open at 8:00 am. Registration is required to recieve free parking, and attendees will be checked in upon arrival.

We highly recommend bringing sturdy hiking shoes, hiking poles, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, water, and a light snack or lunch. Please note that Palassou Ridge is a remote property with very limited cell phone reception. No water sources are available on-site, so please bring sufficient water (3 quarts to 1 gallon of water per person). While all trails have mixed areas of shade, we recommend arriving early to avoid the afternoon heat.

Palassou Ridge is home to rare and endangered species. We ask that you tread lightly and stay on trail so that these species and their habitat can continue to thrive. Please no pets and no smoking of any kind within this preserve.
