Event description

Hey! did you miss out on PearConf's workshop day earlier this summer? Maybe you attended the unconference day and heard everyone talking about their experiences at the workshops the day before and felt some serious FOMO? Fear no more, workshop day is back in San Francisco, Tuesday December 11!

Pair programming can be a lot of fun, and can result in better code than if the two people programmed separately, delivered earlier than two solo teammates might be able to do. But you've done a little pair programming (maybe you've dabbled, maybe you do it 100% every day), and you know a dark little secret people don't talk about:

Sometimes pair programming? it's not fun. Sometimes it feels bad. Sometimes you feel worse than if you were solo programming by yourself.

What's up with that? Why is it that sometimes you can be so brilliant and work so great with someone, and sometimes it feels terrible?

Is it possible to make those awful pairing sessions less awful? What can you do to never be the cause of an awful pairing session for someone else?

The answer is YES and YES, and the concept you've been missing is privilege. Understanding how privilege and pairing interplay is the start to changing bad pairing sessions to be less bad. (It takes two people to pair, so one person can only improve a pairing session so far on their own.)

This full-day workshop dives deep into the types of privilege (both societal and industrial) and

  • explores how privileges change pairing dynamics,
  • surfaces unhealthy pairing dynamics that can happen when you ignore privilege, and
  • begins your journey to learning to work with the privileges that exist in yourself and your pairs.

We'll kick off with coffee and a light breakfast, then jump into Ally Skills for the morning workshop.

Lunch will be provided by our favorite caterer (they're both delicious AND great with allergies and dietary restrictions).

In the afternoon, we'll dive into the Pairing with Privilege workshop: how does privilege intersect with programming?

We'll have coffee and snacks available to keep your energy up through the day.

Who should attend?

Are you a developer who's done some pair programming? we don't expect you to be an expert at pair programming, just someone who's tried it and wants to learn more.

Are you an engineering manager working with developers who pair anywhere from occasionally to all the frickin time?

Are you a pairing enthusiast?

If you answered YES to any of the above questions, this workshop is for you. Come join us!

If your company is purchasing your ticket, please select a corporate rate.
