Paint the Picture with ASL:

Sometimes less is more - Conceptually accurate signing

Presented in spoken English

 

Get ready for the ASLI's Museum Family Fun Day event on April 19th by attending this workshop!  You will learn how to use American Sign Language to accurately "paint the picture" and convey equivalent meaning.  Explore how to improve your descriptive abilities with you use American Sign Language.  Cali Luckett will also explain her how conceptual accuracy positively impacts your use and understanding of ASL concepts.

This workshop will be presented in spoken English, with ASL activities (sign language interpreters are not scheduled to be provided).

 

Date: Saturday, April 11th

Time: 3-5pm

Location: University of Houston Main Campus

Classroom Location: Science and Engineering Complex, room 102

 

Cost:  FREE - this event is sponsored by the Cougar Initiative to Engage (CITE) grant

ONLY UH students will be allowed to attend.

 

 

Educational objectives:               

After attending this workshop, attendees will have gained understanding of the following:

  • Knowledge of the importance of conceptual accuracy in American Sign Language;
  • Knowledge of ASL expansion techniques to convey equivalent meaning;
  • Interactive skill development by analyzing and then practicing with descriptive concepts to portray these in ASL; and
  • Review of the methods working interpreters use in when interpreting visual imagery.

 

 

Attendance policy:  We rely on an accurate attendance count to make important arrangements for our workshops. If you cannot attend, cancel by emailing asli@uh.edu by April 6th.  

 

Directions & Parking:  From I-45 South, exit Cullen.  Turn right. Drive to Holman then turn right.  Park in the Visitor Parking Garage.  Parking is $5 for the day on Sat/Sun.  The building is located directly across from teh garage on Cullen Street.

 


Presenter Bio:

Cali Luckett

 Cali Luckett, NIC, BEI Master, QMHI. During the past 18 years Cali has worked as   an employee, staff interpreter and freelancer primarily in the Houston area. She works as an   interpreter, educator, trainer and consultant. Her career has taken her from the classroom to   the boardroom and many places in between. She’s an avid traveler, cyclist and wanna be   foodie.
