Description

**Please read all of the details below to ensure that you understand the purpose of the group and the requirements before registration. ** With appreciation-- Dianne Austin, Coils to Locs

There is a healthcare disparity that Black/Afro Lationwomen in particular with chemotherapy-related hair loss face: Finding Afrocentric wigs at cancer center wig retail stores or medical wig salons that can be purchased with health insurance. Afrocentric wigs are afro kinky/curly, braided, twists and dreadlock style wigs along with "relaxed straight" wigs in styles that reflect our unique sense of style and swag regardless of age.

Some women are not even aware that their doctor can write a wig prescription, called a cranial prosthesis in situations of chemotherapy-related hair loss that many health insurance plans will cover.

Coils to Locs will address this disparity by supplying these wigs styles to local and national hospitals and medical salons.

FOCUS GROUP DETAILS - PURPOSE

Over the last several months we have worked with wig manufacturers to identify Afrocentric wig styles. We need your opinion about what you think about our wig samples and the business concept. We also want to know about your journey related to your hair loss. The wig line that we will share with the focus group is specific to women. Our goal is to provide wigs for men and children in the future.

PARTICIPANT BENEFITS

Lunch and dessert will be served. Each participant will receive a $10 Gift Card for participating during the 1.5-hour session. We are not able to reimburse for travel expenses to and from the event.

REQUIREMENTS

**RSVP is required. We will not be able to accept walk-ins on the day of the event. **

Participants must be cancer patients or cancer survivors who are Black or Afro Latino, 18 years of age and older who have experienced permanent or temporary hair loss (past or present). In addition:

  • Women who wear their hair unstraightened is our target audience but participants who are open to wearing their hair natural and/or occasionally straighten their hair are welcome.

  • Women who, have experienced some other type of medical-related hair loss not chemotherapy-related are also welcome to participate.

  • All participants will be asked to sign a consent form acknowledging their participation in the focus group.

Because the wigs are Afrocentric in nature, we are looking for Black/Afro Latino women to validate our study as the lack of Afrocentric style wigs that can be purchased through health insurance, cash or credit at a hospital or medical retail store in the styles described earlier primarily affects these women. We recognize that there are women of other ethnicities with kinkier hair types.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The focus group will be very informal. You will meet other women with similar experiences and engage in interesting conversation. Focus group participants will view the various wig styles and be asked questions during the process so be ready to share your feedback, meet new people and have some fun! Participants will receive a $10 gift card at the end of the focus group session.

All responses during the focus group will be anonymous, i.e. not associated with a particular person's name or email address. We will not take pictures of participants at the event.

The focus group will be limited to 10-12 people. Once confirmed, the invite is non-transferrable.

Please contact Dianne Austin, cancer survivor and co-founder of Coils to Locs at daustin@coilstolocs.com if you have any questions.
