Page-to-Stage: Writers Reading Out Loud with Author/Educator Caron Levis

You wrote it, and now somebody wants you to read it–out loud!Whether you relish or dread it, the public reading is part of a writer’s life. Whether it’s on a large stage to fellow writers, an auditorium of teenagers, or a small classroom of young children, the experience should and can be enjoyable for both you and your audience. This workshop will prepare you to be comfortable, confident, and creative while reading your work. You’ll learn exercises for relaxation, projection, and expression and practice techniques for engaging your audience. Whether you are a shy new speaker or an experienced reader you will take away techniques for making your moment enjoyable and memorable.

What To Bring: Yourself dressed in comfortable clothes and shoes, and a few lines of a quote, song, saying or any prose that is not yours and is comfortably memorized–keep it super simple. (“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine you make me happy when skies are gray” is a good example. Happy Birthday is also fine!)

Caron Levis is the author of the picture books, May I Have A Word? (FSG)  Stuck with the Blooz, (HMH) and Ida, Always (Atheneum) which the New York Times Book Review calls, “an example of children’s books at their best.” Forthcoming titles include Stop That Yawn! (Atheneum, 2018) and Mama’s Shoes (Abrams 2019)  Caron (LMSW; MFA) is an adjunct professor and the coordinator for The New School’s Writing for Children/YA MFA program. She has studied acting at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center, the Moscow Arts Theatre, and the Michael Chekhov Acting studio. After many years as a drama based arts educator, Caron now loves using acting and writing to teach social, emotional, and literacy skills to students of all ages through her author workshops. www.caronlevis.com
