Paddle the Preserve: Coastal Habitats

You are surrounded by mangroves as you glide through the water in your canoe, you glimpse wading birds feeding in the distance, a mullet splashes next to your boat-Tranquility! Join Libby Carnahan, UF/IFAS Extension Florida Sea Grant Agent, and Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Extension Agent, Brian Niemann, for a 2-hour guided canoe program at Weedon Island Preserve. While we paddle, we will learn about the coastal habitats including the mangrove forests and seagrass flats, as well as the wildlife that call these places home. Some paddling experience and ability to sit in a canoe for 2 hours in required.
Please meet at the boat launch at 12:45pm to check in. Participants will use county canoes and sign the county canoe waiver. All participants must be at least 10 years old. Any participants under 18 years old must be companied by an adult with a ratio of 1 adult: 1 youth.
Participants must wear a closed-toed wading shoe (old tennis shoes, keens, scuba booties). Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, cover up) is recommended. All participants must abide by the safety policies and recommendations of Pinellas County Staff. Lifevest and paddle will be provided for you. Please bring a water bottle.

UF/IFAS Extension Pinellas County at Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center offers a variety of educational and interpretive programs for the public. Center programs interpret the natural, cultural and archaeological history of the Preserve to demonstrate how the environment and people support and shape each other.
