Event description

Description

In South Carolina, many women and girls struggle to obtain the necessary menstrual supplies they need on a monthly basis. This can mean school absences, embarassment in the workplace, or even a choice between food and hygiene. The Homeless Period Project provides menstrual hygiene products to those in need while educating and advocating to end the stigma of menstruation.

This packing party is part of an effort by a Fall 2019 Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative Community Action Project Team*. We are a diverse group of women and men advocating for a statewide tax exemption on menstrual products (prescription medicines are tax exempt, and these supplies are just as necessary as many prescriptions.) We also want to help give women and girls in schools, shelters, prisons, and disaster areas the supplies they need - and that's where you come in!

The event will be a lot of fun, but we hope to accomplish a lot as well! We will form assembly lines to pack the supplies and get them ready for distribution. We ask that you bring 2 boxes of tampons or pads as a donation; monetary donations will also be accepted by The Homeless Period Project at the event.

Many thanks to the Bohemian Bull for generously hosting this event. Attendees will get to enjoy appetizers and $3 burger night, and of course one of the most popular outdoor spots in town! The event will happen rain or shine.

*Members of this DLI team are: Kate Buckholz (Blackbaud), Tim Goodwin (City of Folly Beach), Shayna Howell (League of Women Voters Charleston Area), Anna Johnson (Charleston County Council), Anna Lewin (SC Community Loan Fund), Glenn Marcus (Ingevity), Darrick Paul (MUSC Health), and Ian Scott (Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce).
