Aloha, Hafa Adai, Malo Aupito, Malo Soifua, Yokwe!

HOME. When tragedy strikes our “homes” we are devastated and immediately seek ways to help.  However far or close it may be, it will always remain in our hearts.  Tropical Cyclone Evan caused catastrophic damages to the South Pacific Island of Independent Samoa on December 13, 2012, causing several casualties and leaving thousands of families without the basic necessities.  Flooding caused severe damages, leaving many families without clothing, food and unimaginable grief.  Today, Samoa continues to cope with the aftermath.

California State University of Fullerton, South Pacific Islander Cultural Association presents "Pacific Islanders for Samoa Relief Benefit" a benefit fundraiser coordinated and spearheaded by the Pacific Islander Health Partnership (PIHP) supported by our collaborative partners; Claremont Graduate University, Samoa Red Cross Society, Digicel Samoa and community members.

We humbly invite you to join us on June 8, 2013 from 3p.m. to 7 p.m. (doors open at 2pm) at the California State University, Fullerton Pavilion as we unite to rally support and raise funds to Empower and Enable the victims of Tropical Cyclone Evan to Rebuild. Event will feature cultural performances, local singers, the legendary Jerome Grey along with spiritual and uplifting music.  We will have community resources, opportunity drawing, silent auction and more!

Pacific Islander Health Partnership, founded in 2003, is a 501(c) (3) exempt organization serving the Pacific Islander communities to reduce health disparities and promotes living in good health and well being.  Pacific Islander Health Partnership’s mission is to serve indigenous Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders to educate, advocate, train leaders and build community capacity for health for islanders to reduce health disparities in cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other chronic illnesses with special programs for island seniors and youth. We also provide services to those outside of the Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander communities.

Our goal is to create a sustainable disaster preparedness program to collaborate, educate, and provide health services to our communities both locally and internationally. Due to the devastating effects of Tropical Cyclone Evan, the overall goal of this particular project is to bring relief in the form of medical supplies, goods, monetary assistance, educational training, and health services to Independent Samoa as well as increase worldwide awareness of the damages caused by Tropical Cyclone Evan.  The monies raised will be used to purchase goods to load into the freight container together with the donated goods received and shipped to Apia, Samoa. The team will work collaboratively with Digicel Samoa, Samoa Red Cross Society and the village Mayors in distributing the goods.

Tropical Cyclone Evan, like Hurricane Sandy and the Tornado in Oklahoma are disasters that have devastated and forever changed the lives of those affected.  Unfortunately, many of us may not be prepared when a disaster strikes or have a disaster preparedness program within our family, faith based or community setting. We hope that the partnerships created and forged will empower and enable our communities in sharing crucial resources and services.  We appreciate your support and generosity as we work towards laying a strong foundation for a sustainable disaster preparedness program to collaborate, educate, and provide health services to our communities both locally and internationally.

Without the support of generous donors like you, the people of Samoa will have a difficult time recovering from the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Evan. The Pacific Islander Health Partnership and our community partners appreciate your tax-deductible gift, assistance and generosity.  Please join us as we rally support and raise money for the victims of Independent Samoa who were severely affected by Tropical Cyclone Evan which occurred on December 13, 2012.

With heartfelt gratitude for your support and on behalf of the Pacific Islander Health Partnership. Fa’afetai Tele Lava (Thank you very much).

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?”  Thank you for your time, effort and service to our communities!
