At OUTSIDE, our goal is to shift the Florida landscape paradigm towards more sustainable landscaping.

About this event

Increasing the adoption of sustainable landscape practices will help create a more vibrant, healthy, and sustainable future for all Floridians. Rapid population growth, water responsibility issues, land conservation challenges, sea-level rise, coastal community resilience, biodiversity loss, and climate change are a few examples of the challenges facing the Florida landscape. These vital issues in Florida require us to take action and change certain landscaping behaviors and patterns, so we can contribute to the solutions needed in the future.

Last year, we held our first OUTSIDE Collab event. With an attendance of 400+ people, the virtual event was a success, providing the first step toward collaborating on a large scale and sharing the message of OUTSIDE to Floridians across the state.

The way we achieve our purpose for OUTSIDE is going to be determined by all of us. By coming together and working collaboratively, we can look for specific actions and solutions which we can apply toward achieving our purpose. We invite you to join us at OUTSIDE 2021 this fall, where we will shift the Florida landscape paradigm together.

Day 1 - Oct 21st will be fully virtual

DAY 1 - Sharing Perspectives - Virtual | Oct. 21, 1 - 4PM

Overview: OUTSIDE 2021 will kick off with a virtual half day event and will be accessible via your web browser and/or mobile device. With a live keynote and panel discussions, attendees will be able to partake in an interactive and engaging experience. The virtual event includes panels, presentations, and keynote speaker Doug Tallamy.

Developer Panel: Change the landscape paradigm in Master Planned Communities to move toward Florida-friendly and native plant use and practices.

Implementation Panel: The process for delivering a successful project, from the WHY to ideation to long term maintenance, and describing the critical path.

DAY 2 - Workshops + Tours - In Person, 7836 Cherry Lake Rd., Groveland, FL, 34736| Oct. 22, 9:30AM - 4PM

(limited to 120 attendees, no on site registration available)

Overview: Attendees will have the opportunity to experience two different native and Florida friendly plantings at Cherrylake, one of the largest ornamental tree farms in the United States. After lunch, attendees will tour Victory Pointe Park in Downtown Clermont and end the day at Suncreek Brewery. Doug Tallamy will be attending day 2 as well to engage in person with attendees. Lunch and two drink tickets are included in registration.

Victory Pointe Park Tour This walking tour will showcase an innovative $9.5M green infrastructure and redevelopment project in the heart of Clermont’s downtown waterfront. The centerpiece of the 10-acre site is a new storm water pond and a filter marsh to clean runoff before it flows into Lake Minneola.

Keynote Speaker: Doug Tallamy

Doug Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, where he has authored 104 research publications and has taught insect-related courses for over 40 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book, Bringing Nature Home, was published by Timber Press in 2007 and was awarded the 2008 Silver Medal by the Garden Writers' Association. The Living Landscape, co-authored with Rick Darke, was published in 2014; Nature's Best Hope, a New York Times Best Seller, was released in February 2020, and his latest book The Nature of Oaks was released by Timber Press in March 2021. Among his awards are the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation and the Tom Dodd, Jr. Award of Excellence, the 2018 AHS B.Y. Morrison Communication Award, and the 2019 Cynthia Westcott Scientific Writing Award.
