Event description

Description

OUT'hood FEST is Boston’s newest festival that lifts up the voices and works of local LGBTQ artists of color. All of the works presented at the festival are new original works and works-in-progress.

The QTPOC Mixtape Project, led by OUT'hood Resident Artist Eddie Maisonet, is an interactive audience experience to bring out the voices of Boston-based queer people of color and hold space for their stories. Facilitated by Queer & Trans People of Color (QTPOC) and Community Storytellers Erin Ebony, Danny Harris Sr., J.D. Stokely, and Cheyenne Harvey, audiences will participate in a range of storytelling activities stationed throughout the space and hear stories of growing in a changing Boston.

A born and bred Boston writer and scholar, Eddie Maisonet is a 24 year old Afro Puerto Rican queer nonbinary boi who wants to manifest healing for his communities through storytelling. He sees personal narrative as one of the best ways to build a more joyful, righteous, playful resilience in the face of marginalization. As a teaching artist, he specializes in workshops centered on facilitating queer trans people of color using storytelling to witness their own truths as well as those of others. His work seeks to connect through isolation with, ideally, some laughs and sighs whether it is through his writing itself or his role in community. Eddie’s residency with The Theater Offensive is his first major creative opportunity to manifest something great: the QTPOC Mixtape Project, a community storytelling project.

OUT’hood FEST is the culmination of The Theater Offensive’s OUT'hood Residency Program, which supports the creation of artwork by, for, and/or about LGBTQ people. This residency program supports artists with mentorship, in-kind resources, and financial support. OUT'hood FEST and the OUT'hood Residency Program were made possible by the Barr Foundation and the Klarman Family Foundation. Additional support for OUT'hood Fest comes from our co-presenter Hibernian Hall, the National Performance Network, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Boston Cultural Council, and the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition.

Since 1989, The Theater Offensive has served its mission with groundbreaking interactive workshops and shows by, for, and about the LGBTQ community. Our work is called OUT In Your Neighborhood (OUT’hood) because we go beyond traditional theater spaces. OUT’hood reflects the diversity of Boston, gives voice to underserved LGBT community members, creates avenues for cross-cultural dialogue, and breaks down the barriers of homophobia, racism, bigotry, and hate.
