Event description
A Lewis & Clark History Tour outside for your group only, including the full-sized replicas of the boats of the Expedition

About this event

A guide will take you aboard our full-sized replicas of the Keelboat and the White and Red Pirogues, the boats that took the Lewis & Clark Expedition up the Missouri River. You'll learn the local and national history related to Lewis and Clark as you walk along the Rivanna River and on the trails of the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center. The Center was built on land once owned by Jonathan Clark, William Clark's grandfather.; William Clark's parents lived over the hill in a cabin. Our guide will discuss the history of the Monacan Nation on the site, as well as along the entire course of the Rivanna River. Meriwether Lewis's connection to the Southwest Mountains and to Albemarle County will be presented, as well as Thomas Jefferson's modifications of the Rivanna River.

We recently reopened our interior exhibitions and open space! The tour will include a viewing of our art and artifacts and interpretation of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

if you do not see your desired time offered, please contact us for a reservation at lcecvirginia@gmail.com

The main ticket is for up to four people; we require the $60 ticket to schedule a private tour, but you are welcome to buy the ticket for one person or up to four. Additional people are $15 with a maximum number currently of seven.

Currently we are not requiring visitors to wear a mask outdoors, but our guides will wear masks upon your request. Rules may change depending on the situation, so please bring a mask in case it is called for. Thank you for your cooperation!

Organizer Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center

Organizer of Outdoor History and Full-size Boat Replica Tour

The Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center is a place where children and adults are encouraged to explore! We have many art, history, and nature programs based on the skills of exploration, as well as exciting workshops, activity stations, history games, and challenges.

Charlottesville is an important part of the history of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Meriwether Lewis was born in Ivy, near Charlottesville, and his relatives lived in the shelter of the Southwest Mountains where the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center is also located. William Clark's family once owned the land where the Center was built, and his older brother George Rogers Clark was born in a small cabin nearby. We are located off the beautiful Rivanna River, which was travelled by Thomas Jefferson, whose Monticello is only a 30 minute kayak or canoe ride downstream from our river launch. Criss-crossing trails fan out from the Center and along the river.

We tell the local story with both our signature and premium history tours. These tours include boarding full-size replica boats and examining our inside exhibits, some donated to us by the Lewis family. Our Annual Portable Feast, a dinner featuring historical recipes, happens in the fall.
