This programme brings together works exploring a variety of OUT-TAKE’s different musical interests.

Australian sound artist Alexandra Spence’s new work and London-based composer/acoustician Georgia Rodgers’ 'Partial Filter' both explore the nature of sound in a very intensive and elemental way, although using quite different methods. Spence’s piece, in her own words, 'considers the score as a way to illuminate the interactions between sound, spaces and bodies', while Rodgers explores the variety of different air-based sounds that the tuba can produce, with the aid of amplification and electronic augmentation.

OUT-TAKE pianist Harry Matthews’ actively listening to me also explores the ways in which people listen to music, by asking the musicians to react to the pitches played by their colleagues, creating a kind of musical ‘game’ that produces unique results in each performance. In contrast, London-based composer Oliver Sellwood’s Nara finds an affinity with Rodgers’ work through the use of electronic augmentation to transform the sound of an instrument – in this case the electric guitar. In ‘Nara’, the guitar is modified with a ‘hexaphonic’ pickup, which allows each string to be amplified separately, with different electronic effects applied to each to create a wide array of unique sonorities.

OUT-TAKE tubist Alexander Glyde-Bates’ piece explores another important feature of the ensemble’s recent work: the use of visual elements in performance. Tropography investigates the use of video in musical performance, continuing the composer’s recent experiments with crossdisciplinary work of this nature.

Finally, the programme is rounded off with a movement from John Cage’s Violin arrangement of his classic Cheap Imitation. This homage to Erik Satie was composed to the same rhythmic structure as the French composer’s Socrate, using chance procedures to generate the pitch materials.

OUT-TAKE Ensemble is a collective of composers and performers based in Southampton, who present experimental repertoire by both young and established composers. Since forming as students at the University of Southampton in 2016, they have performed a series of concerts at different venues in Southampton, and at Bath Spa University.
