Mon, Jun 12, 2017, 8:00 AM – Fri, Jun 16, 2017, 12:00 PM PDT
OUSD Mathematics TRU Summer Institute
This is a 5 Day series from June 12th - June 16th, 2017, each day from 8:00am until 12:00pm.
Last summer we received an overwhelmingly positive response from K-8 teachers who attended OUSD’s Mathematics Summer Institute facilitated by David Foster, Harold Asturias and their team from Silicon Valley Mathematics.! Fortunately we were able to secure the David and his team for Summer Institute #2 – most likely our last summer institute for a while. This institute will provide tools, resources and activities designed to emphasize the dimensions of a powerful math classrooms through lesson design and facilitation. A key outcome of the institute is to support teachers in authentically incorporating the standards for math practice in instruction to deepen learning through your common core curriculum.
In summary, the institute will build upon last summer’s learnings and will help advance our practice relative to the following aspects of teaching and learning:
- facilitating rich tasks with students for best effect
- supporting English learners in math (Harold Asturias is an ELD expert)
- integrating SMPs into instruction
- developing students’ “ownership” of learning
- using “problems of the month” effectively
- employing formative assessment daily in your mathematics classrooms
Participants will enjoy both whole group experiences (K-8) and grade level experiences in their grade level. In addition, participants will be funded to pair up with a partner or two and view and try out learnings in each other’s classrooms through the lens of take-aways from the institute.
