Description

With less than 3 weeks left to submit comments opposing HUD’s attack on crucial civil rights protections, join leading legal experts and advocates for a panel discussion on the sweeping impact that the Trump Administration’s proposed rule that would on our ability to challenge discrimination in the courts.

Trump’s HUD has released a proposed rule that would gut the disparate impact legal tool, a bedrock legal principle under the Fair Housing Act that allows us to challenge discrimination in court. If this rule moves forward, a landlord could evict victims of domestic violence based on crimes committed by their abusers in their homes, or a bank could charge excessive fees or rates to certain groups who seek home mortgage loans, forcing people of color or people to take on risky or costly loans. But its impact extends far beyond housing. Gutting this protection under the Fair Housing Act is part of the Trump administration’s broad-based attack on using disparate impact to address discrimination in other areas, including education, employment, healthcare, the environment, transportation, and the criminal justice system. We must fight any efforts to take away the rights that we all share and hold dear.
